Dictionary Definitions:
Fundamental adj. & noun - affecting or serving as a base or foundation, essential, primary, original.
Fundamentalism - noun
1. Strict maintenance of traditional Protestant beliefs such as the
inerrancy of Scripture and literal acceptance of the creeds as fundamentals of Christianity.
(def. inerrancy - the quality of not being liable to err)
2. Strict maintenance of ancient or fundamental doctrines of any religion, especially Islam.
We have witnessed the death of innocents in Algeria as a result of activities carried out by fundamental Islamic groups.
We are witnessing at the present time activities carried out by the US military in Iraq launched by their commander, President George W Bush, a confessed fundamental Christian. Europeans were told “You’re either with us or a’gin us”. Presumably this means that we support fundamentalism if we support the present activities in the Middle East.
The one thing that appears to be directly related to “Fundamentalism” is that innocent people have to die. It isn’t necessary to analyse the entire Iraq operation; simply to acknowledge the first attack on Fallujah which slaughtered 600 Iraqis with no distinction between militants and civilians. The death toll as a result of this war that was said by the White House to have been over more than 12 months ago continues to escalate.
*There appears to be a general feeling that countries that speak the same language think the same.
*English speaking countries include Australia, Canada, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom and the United States of America.
*An investigation of the internal affairs of these countries will show that we all have different priorities and different views on religions and races. Our histories on aboriginal descendents and populations affected by the slavery trade in the past make the entire basis of our societies different.
*The United States put the native Americans into reservations. There is no history of this activity having been carried out in Canada. There is no history of the Aborigines in Australia being put into reservations. This is an American way of dealing with the situation. (There is a correlation here with Guantanamo Bay)
*We are not the same as the Americans and we need to recognise that the so-called special relationship is one of convenience. France has many business interests in the USA and both France and the UK have the joint Airbus venture which is competing directly with the Boeing corporation of America.
The point of this article is to ask the reader to consider why we are considered to have a special relationship.
The Americans came into WWII to help us remove the threat of Herr Hitler - attempting to take over the world - but that was for the whole of Europe, not just the UK We are all extremely grateful for their help during those dark days. Because of those heroic efforts we are able to see individual countries today, developing each in their own individual way, with their own customs which makes them just that little bit different from each other. What a boring world it would be if we were all the same !
*We, like most other countries in the world use Microsoft software in most of our domestic computers.
*Our cinemas show over 90% US films on a regular basis.
*The Boeing 747 still dominates the skies of the world. The American owned Ford (Dagenham) and Jaguar (Coventry) are both under threat. How many goods on our supermarket shelves are American owned ? It is time that we wake up and realise that we only have this special relationship because we are a valued customer; no other reason !
When we tried to get permission for Concord to land in the USA we had an up-hill struggle. Every possible argument was put forward to try and prevent it using US airports. Not one Concord was bought by a US airline.
The USA is essentially a giant business and as such must be dealt with by those that are experienced in dealing with business magnates. It is not a game for the inexperienced.
