Seaford - Exchange (01323)
A short history of the town of Seaford
****Seaford was part of the ancient Cinque ports system (13th c.) in which towns along the Kent and Sussex coasts were expected to contribute Ships and Seamen to defend our shores in time of war. In return those towns had many civic and political privileges not accorded elsewhere.
****Due to electoral rigging Seaford became one of the so-called “rotten boroughs” whose electoral independence was ended by the Reform Act of 1892.
****In 1792 the first stage coach service began between Seaford and Lewes. By 1830 a regular coach route to Hastings was in operation.
****Originally Seaford (‘ford by the sea’) was a ford across the old course of the river Ouse which, prior to the great storms in the 16th century flowed into the sea at Seaford. After the diversion of the river to flow into the sea at Meeching, this became the ‘new haven’ whilst Seaford was know until 1834 as the ‘old haven’.
****In 1801 the total population was 847, yet because of it’s former importance it continued to return two MP’s. By 1901 the population had increased to 2,615.
The London, Brighton & South Coast Railway Company opened the branch line to Seaford in 1864.
****High tides and channel storms combined to regularly flood and wreak havoc on the town until concrete sea defences were built in the 1880’s.
****The Martello Tower(s), one of more than 70, built along the south coast to protect England against Napoleon. (Seaford’s was No.74) but never fired a shot in anger. Seaford’s Tower is the home of the Seaford Museum.
****The Seaford Head Golf Club was established in 1887 !
Information obtained from various publications including Radio Brighton’s History Trail series (library reference S942.257) and Mr & Mrs McCarthy’s ‘History Trail of the Town & Cinque Port of Seaford’ published by Lindel Organisation, Croft Lane, Seaford. The most concise researched account of Seaford was compiled by a former librarian of Eastbourne library under the title ‘An East Sussex County Library BRIEF HISTORY- SEAFORD’ 1982.

Warning Notice from M.E. & U. Party
Seaford Town Centre can provide parking for approximately 100 vehicles at any one time. There is a single yellow line on the Right-hand side of Broad Street, which you will find occupied by cars most of the time. Be warned - unless you carry a blue badge you are likely to collect a Penalty Ticket if you park on this side of the road. The secretary will be contacting the local town council and E.S.C.C. with a suggestion to introduce some limited paid parking (30 pence for 30 minutes) on this side of the road with appropriate provision for reserving space when shop deliveries are expected.
We thoroughly recommend the Even Number Plate - Even Date system for your shopping ! This helps to reduce traffic by approximately 33% meaning that more parking spaces would be available when you go shopping.
